Nakshatra Calculator

Find your janma nakshatra (birth star), pada, and Moon rasi from your birth details, computed from real planetary positions with the Lahiri ayanamsa.

The Moon moves one nakshatra per day, so birth time matters on boundary days. Everything runs in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

How do I find my nakshatra by date of birth?
Enter your birth date, time, and place above. The calculator computes the Moon’s sidereal position at that moment with a real astronomical ephemeris and the Lahiri ayanamsa, then identifies which of the 27 nakshatras it occupied: that is your janma nakshatra.
What if I do not know my birth time?
The Moon stays in one nakshatra for about a day, so most dates give a confident answer even with the default noon time. If you were born on a day the Moon changed stars, the exact hour decides which one is yours: try morning and evening times and see if the result changes.
What is a pada?
Each nakshatra divides into four padas of 3 degrees 20 minutes. Your pada refines the reading: two people with the same birth star but different padas express it through different navamsa signs.
What is the difference between Sun and Moon nakshatra?
Your janma (Moon) nakshatra is the one used for personality, dashas, and marriage matching. The Sun nakshatra, shown alongside, changes about every 13.5 days and is used in some South Indian traditions and for certain muhurta rules.
Is this nakshatra calculator accurate?
Yes. It uses the Moshier astronomical ephemeris, accurate to well under a degree, with the standard Lahiri ayanamsa used by traditional panchang publishers. Boundary cases depend on the accuracy of your birth time.
