Why the dates start in March

The Western zodiac begins at the spring equinox, the moment the Sun crosses the celestial equator heading north, which falls on or near March 20. That point is defined as zero degrees of Aries, and the twelve signs each cover exactly thirty degrees of the Sun’s annual path from there. The zodiac year, in other words, starts with spring, which is why Aries carries all that new-beginning energy.

Why the boundary dates wobble

You will see slightly different dates on different sites, and none of them are wrong. The Sun does not change signs at midnight on a fixed date; it crosses each thirty degree boundary at a specific moment that drifts across the calendar because the year is 365.25 days long, not 365. The crossing also lands at different local times around the world. So a person born on January 20 might be a Capricorn one year and an Aquarius another, and the only way to know is to compute the Sun’s actual position for their exact birth date, time, and place. What being on the cusp really means

Cusp babies, born on a boundary date, often adopt a blend identity: Capriquarius, Pisces-Aries. Here is the technically honest version: the Sun is always in exactly one sign. There is no moment of being both. If you were born on a cusp date, you have a definite Sun sign; you just need the calculation to know which one.

The blend feeling people report is real, though, and astrology explains it without breaking its own rules: someone born with the Sun at the very end of Capricorn very often has Mercury or Venus already in Aquarius, so their chart genuinely carries both signatures. The blend lives in the whole chart, not in the Sun. This is one more reason the big three beat Sun-sign-only astrology.

Western vs Vedic dates

One more source of confusion: Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, anchored to the constellations rather than the seasons, currently offset from the Western tropical zodiac by about 24 degrees.
